The Best Dreamcast Games

The Dreamcast lasted about two years in most markets and produced a library people still work through, because Sega spent its last hardware generation funding things nobody else would have funded. A rhythm game about shooting, an on-rails music shooter, a shopkeeping simulator dressed as a revenge story.

It also had the best arcade ports of its era, because Sega's arcade boards and the console shared an architecture. This list is split that way: the arcade lineage, the fighting games, and the experiments.

The Dreamcast essentials

Short library, high hit rate.

  • Jet Set Radio (2000)

    • Dreamcast
    • PC
    • Console re-release

Cel-shading's first real showcase, built around skating, spray paint and a soundtrack that defined a look for a decade.

  • SoulCalibur (1999)

    • Dreamcast
    • Arcade
    • Modern re-release

A launch port so far beyond its arcade original that it was used to sell the hardware. Eight-way run gave 3D fighting its footing.

  • Shenmue (1999)

    • Dreamcast
    • PC
    • PS4
    • Xbox

A revenge story where you spend most of your time looking for a sailor and working a forklift. Slow, strange, and the ancestor of the open-world town.

  • Crazy Taxi (1999)

    • Dreamcast
    • Arcade
    • Modern re-release

Drive people around a city against a clock, badly and at speed. The purest arcade design on the console.

  • Power Stone (1999)

    • Dreamcast
    • Arcade
    • Modern re-release

A fighting game in a full 3D arena where the scenery is a weapon. Chaotic, fast, and the best four-player thing on the system.

  • Marvel vs Capcom 2 (2000)

    • Dreamcast
    • Arcade
    • Modern re-release

Fifty-six characters, three-on-three teams, and combos that leave the screen. Still the most joyfully unbalanced fighting game ever released.

  • Skies of Arcadia (2000)

    • Dreamcast
    • GameCube

Sky pirates and airship battles as a separate turn-based layer. The most optimistic RPG of its generation.

  • Phantasy Star Online (2000)

    • Dreamcast
    • GameCube
    • Xbox

The first console online RPG that worked, with a word-select system so players without a keyboard could still coordinate across languages.

  • Sonic Adventure (1998)

    • Dreamcast
    • GameCube
    • PC
    • Console

Sonic's first proper 3D outing — uneven, ambitious, and the Sonic stages are still fast in a way the sequels lost.

  • Grandia II (2000)

    • Dreamcast
    • PS2
    • PC
    • Switch

The best turn-based battle system of its era: a visible timeline you can interrupt, which turns every fight into a small tactical problem.

Dreamcast games nobody else would have made

Sega's last hardware generation funded some genuinely strange things.

  • Rez (2001)

    • Dreamcast
    • PS2
    • Xbox 360
    • PS4
    • PC

An on-rails shooter where every shot is a note and the soundtrack builds itself out of your play. Still the best synaesthesia game there is.

  • Space Channel 5 (1999)

    • Dreamcast
    • PS2
    • Modern re-release

A rhythm game about a television reporter dancing aliens into submission. The timing is stricter than it looks and the style is unmatched.

  • Ikaruga (2001)

    • Dreamcast
    • Arcade
    • Switch
    • PC
    • Xbox

A shoot-'em-up with two colours: absorb your own, shoot the other. One rule, and an entire game of depth out of it.

  • ChuChu Rocket (1999)

    • Dreamcast
    • GBA
    • Mobile

Arrows on a grid, mice that never stop moving, and the first online multiplayer game most Dreamcast owners ever played — free.

  • Bangai-O (1999)

    • Dreamcast
    • N64
    • Modern re-release

Treasure again: a shooter where the reward for being nearly dead is a screen-clearing counter-attack of a thousand missiles.

  • Cosmic Smash (2001)

    • Dreamcast
    • Arcade

Squash crossed with Breakout in a glass tube, released in tiny numbers and never re-released. One of the rarest good games there is.

  • The House of the Dead 2 (1998)

    • Dreamcast
    • Arcade
    • Modern remake

The light-gun classic, with voice acting that has outlived the genre. Best with the original gun peripheral and a wall you do not mind shouting at.
