The Best Game Boy Advance Games
The Game Boy Advance is roughly a Super Nintendo in a pocket, and Nintendo treated it that way: full-length RPGs, proper strategy games, and Metroidvanias that were not compromised versions of anything.
It is also the handheld generation whose library is hardest to play legitimately today, which is worth knowing before you start. This list splits it into the RPGs and tactics, and the action games the hardware suited.
GBA RPGs and strategy
Full-length games, on a screen with no backlight for the first three years.
Pokemon Emerald (2004)
- GBA
The definitive third-generation Pokemon, with the Battle Frontier attached — still the hardest post-game the series has shipped.
Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen (2004)
- GBA
Kanto rebuilt on the Ruby engine, which is the cleanest way to play the original games without their rough edges.
Fire Emblem (2003)
- GBA
The first entry released in English, and still the best introduction — permanent death, a tutorial campaign that does not condescend, and tight maps.
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones (2004)
- GBA
The friendlier one, with a world map and optional battles so a bad run is recoverable. The best Fire Emblem for a first attempt.
Advance Wars (2001)
- GBA
- Switch remake
Turn-based warfare with no randomness and no fog beyond what the map says. The purest strategy game Nintendo has published.
Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising (2003)
- GBA
- Switch remake
More of the first with a harder campaign and a design mode. Both are in the Switch remake, which is the practical way to play them.
Golden Sun (2001)
- GBA
A traditional turn-based RPG where the spells double as overworld puzzle tools. Handsome, long, and unusually generous with secrets.
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (2003)
- GBA
Tactics with a job system and a much-argued-about law system that bans actions per battle. Lighter than the PS1 original and enormous.
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga (2003)
- GBA
- 3DS
Turn-based combat where every attack and every defence needs a button press. The funniest RPG Nintendo has published.
Mother 3 (2006)
- GBA
Never released in English officially, and the most affecting thing on the system. A rhythm-based combo system sits under a very sad story.
GBA action and platformers
The hardware handled sprites well, and the action library shows it.
Metroid Fusion (2002)
- GBA
- Switch Online
The most directed Metroid, and the tensest — an unkillable pursuer turns exploration into a series of escapes.
Metroid: Zero Mission (2004)
- GBA
- Switch Online
The original Metroid rebuilt with a map and modern controls, plus a stealth section the first game never had. The best starting point in the series.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (2003)
- GBA
- Modern collections
Absorb a soul from every enemy and use it as a spell — the best progression system the series has had, in its best handheld entry.
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap (2004)
- GBA
- Switch Online
Shrinking to the size of a beetle as a puzzle mechanic, in the best-drawn 2D Zelda. Short by the series' standards and very dense.
Wario Land 4 (2001)
- GBA
- Switch Online
A platformer where you cannot die, only be transformed, and every level ends with a timed escape. Weirder and better than the Mario games next to it.
Mega Man Zero (2002)
- GBA
- Modern collections
Harsh, fast and graded on performance after every mission. The hardest mainline Mega Man, with the best movement.
Astro Boy: Omega Factor (2003)
- GBA
Treasure's licensed beat-'em-up, which nobody bought and which is one of the best action games on the handheld.
Drill Dozer (2005)
- GBA
- Switch Online
A platformer built entirely around a drill, with a rumble cartridge. Game Freak's other series, and almost nobody played it.
