The Best Original Xbox Games
The original Xbox was a black box with a hard drive in it, which was unusual in 2001 and changed what a console game could assume: saves anywhere, a soundtrack you supplied, and online play with a headset as standard rather than an add-on.
Its library reflects a company buying its way in — a flagship shooter, a lot of western RPGs, and a run of funded one-offs that sold badly and are still worth finding. This is the list split that way, with a note on what is playable today.
The Xbox essentials
The games the console is remembered for.
Halo: Combat Evolved (2001)
- Xbox
- PC
- Xbox One
- Series X
Two weapons, a rechargeable shield and grenades on a shoulder button — a control scheme almost every console shooter since has copied. The Silent Cartographer still teaches level design.
Halo 2 (2004)
- Xbox
- PC
- Xbox One
- Series X
Dual wielding, a cliffhanger ending people still complain about, and the matchmaking system that made console multiplayer a normal thing to do.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003)
- Xbox
- PC
- Switch
- Mobile
BioWare's best-structured RPG, with a twist that works because the systems were in on it. Still the Star Wars story most people would pick.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002)
- Xbox
- PC
An open world with no quest markers and directions given in prose. Hostile, strange, and the most distinctive setting Bethesda has built.
Ninja Gaiden (2004)
- Xbox
- Xbox 360
- Switch
- PC
Punishing action with a camera that fights you and combat that rewards absolute precision. One of the hardest games of its generation on purpose.
Fable (2004)
- Xbox
- PC
- Xbox 360
Smaller than it promised and charming anyway — a countryside RPG where the villagers react to how you look and what you have done.
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (2005)
- Xbox
- PC
- PS2
- GameCube
The best stealth game of its era: light and sound as real mechanics, co-op designed as its own campaign, and a knife that changed how the series played.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2003)
- Xbox
- PS2
- GameCube
- PC
Rewinding time as an answer to a missed jump, which removed the frustration from acrobatic platforming without removing the difficulty.
Forza Motorsport (2005)
- Xbox
Microsoft's answer to Gran Turismo, and the first one with damage modelling and a tuning depth that took it seriously.
Star Wars Battlefront II (2005)
- Xbox
- PS2
- PC
- PSP
Large-scale battles with space combat between them, and a galactic conquest mode that gave the whole thing a point.
Original Xbox hidden gems
Microsoft funded a lot of unusual things to fill the library. Most of them sold badly and several never left the console.
Jet Set Radio Future (2002)
- Xbox
Skating, graffiti and one of the best soundtracks in games, in a cel-shaded Tokyo. Never properly re-released, which is a small tragedy.
Psychonauts (2005)
- Xbox
- PC
- PS4
- Switch
- Xbox One
A platformer set inside people's minds, each level built around a mental state. Sold almost nothing and eventually got a sequel sixteen years later.
Panzer Dragoon Orta (2002)
- Xbox
An on-rails shooter of astonishing craft, from a Sega team working on Microsoft hardware. Expensive second-hand and worth it.
Jade Empire (2005)
- Xbox
- PC
- Mobile
BioWare's martial-arts RPG, with real-time combat and fighting styles instead of a party. Smaller than their other games and more focused.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (2005)
- Xbox
- PC
- PS4
- Switch
A bounty hunter who fires live animals from a crossbow, switching between first and third person. Far better than that sentence suggests.
Steel Battalion (2002)
- Xbox
Shipped with a forty-button controller and two foot pedals, and an eject button you had to press or lose your save. The most committed simulator on any console.
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge (2003)
- Xbox
Arcade dogfighting in an alternate 1930s, with the best sense of speed on the console. Never re-released.
MechAssault (2002)
- Xbox
BattleTech made arcade-fast, and one of the first games most people played over Xbox Live. Heavier and slower than a shooter, deliberately.
Conker: Live and Reloaded (2005)
- Xbox
Rare's crude N64 platformer remade with a large multiplayer mode attached. Still the strangest thing Nintendo ever published, now on Microsoft hardware.
Project Gotham Racing 2 (2003)
- Xbox
Kudos points for driving stylishly rather than quickly, which made a racing game about showing off. The city tracks are still excellent.
