The Best GameCube Games
The GameCube sold badly and is remembered fondly, which is a combination that usually means the library was better than the marketing. It was: a short generation with an unusually high hit rate, and a controller people still buy adapters for twenty years later.
This is the list split into the first-party run everyone names, the role-playing games the console is quietly strong on, and the ones that were genuinely good and sold to nobody. Several are on Switch now, which is noted where it is true.
The GameCube essentials
The games people buy the console for, still.
Metroid Prime (2002)
- GameCube
- Wii
- Switch
A first-person game that is about looking rather than shooting — scanning everything is the point, and the world is built to reward it. The Switch remaster is the easiest way in.
Resident Evil 4 (2005)
- GameCube
- PS2
- Wii
- PC
- Switch
- Modern remake
The game that reinvented the over-the-shoulder action game, and did it first on this console. Pacing that never stops introducing something new for twenty hours.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2002)
- GameCube
- Wii U
The cel-shaded one people complained about and then loved. The sailing is slow by design and the combat is the most readable in the series.
Super Smash Bros. Melee (2001)
- GameCube
Still played competitively a quarter of a century later, on original hardware, because the movement has depth nobody has intentionally reproduced since.
Super Mario Sunshine (2002)
- GameCube
- Switch
The odd one — a water jetpack, a holiday island, and platforming challenges that take it away from you. Rougher than Mario 64 and more interesting for it.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (2004)
- GameCube
- Switch
Turn-based combat with timed button presses on every attack and block, and the funniest script Nintendo has published. Remade for Switch in 2024.
Pikmin 2 (2004)
- GameCube
- Wii
- Switch
The one without the day limit, which turns the series from a panic into a puzzle. Caves add a roguelike layer the others do not have.
Luigi's Mansion (2001)
- GameCube
- 3DS
Short, strange and atmospheric — a launch game that is closer to a haunted-house puzzle than a platformer, and still the best-looking use of the hardware's lighting.
F-Zero GX (2003)
- GameCube
Brutally fast, brutally hard, and never re-released. The story mode is one of the most difficult things Nintendo has ever put its name to.
Mario Kart: Double Dash (2003)
- GameCube
Two characters per kart, each with their own special item — the most mechanically distinct Mario Kart, and the best one for two people on one machine.
GameCube RPGs
The part of the library people forget. The console was short on them at the time and the ones it got were good.
Tales of Symphonia (2003)
- GameCube
- PS3
- Switch
- PC
Real-time party combat on a 2D plane, with a fifty-hour story that takes a hard turn halfway through. The best-liked entry in a long series.
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (2005)
- GameCube
Tactics with permanent death and a cast worth keeping alive, and the first entry in the series with 3D battles. Expensive second-hand for a reason.
Skies of Arcadia Legends (2003)
- GameCube
- Dreamcast
Sky pirates, airship battles as a separate turn-based system, and an optimism most RPGs of its era did not have. Originally a Dreamcast game.
Baten Kaitos (2003)
- GameCube
An RPG where every action is a card, drawn from a deck that changes as cards age in your hand. Strange, slow, and unlike anything since.
Eternal Darkness (2002)
- GameCube
Horror with a sanity meter that lies to the player — fake crashes, fake volume changes, fake save deletions. Nothing has dared repeat it.
GameCube hidden gems
Good games, small audiences, mostly never re-released.
Viewtiful Joe (2003)
- GameCube
- PS2
A side-scrolling beat-'em-up where slow motion and fast-forward are your attacks. Hard, stylish, and built around a joke it commits to completely.
Beyond Good and Evil (2003)
- GameCube
- PS2
- Xbox
- PC
An adventure game about a photojournalist, with hovercraft racing and stealth stitched around it. Sold terribly and has been quietly loved ever since.
Custom Robo (2004)
- GameCube
Build a small robot from parts, then fight in a tiny arena in fast real-time bouts. A whole competitive game hidden inside a children's story.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (2004)
- GameCube
- Wii
Played on the bongo controller, and genuinely one of the best-feeling platformers Nintendo has made. Later re-released with a normal pad.
Super Monkey Ball 2 (2002)
- GameCube
Tilt the floor, not the ball. A precision game with a punishing late game and the best set of party minigames on the console.
