The Best Xbox One Games

The Xbox One had a difficult start and a much better ending, largely because of two things: the Forza Horizon series became the best arcade racing on any platform, and Game Pass turned the console into the cheapest way to play a large library.

This is split into the exclusives, the racing games the console was genuinely best at, and the smaller games most people first played because a subscription put them there.

The Xbox One exclusives

Most of these are on PC too — Microsoft stopped treating that as a contradiction.

  • Ori and the Blind Forest (2015)

    • Xbox One
    • PC
    • Switch

A hand-painted Metroidvania with the best movement in the genre, and an escape sequence twenty minutes in that people still talk about.

  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps (2020)

    • Xbox One
    • PC
    • Switch

Bigger, with a proper combat system rather than a single projectile. The best-looking 2D game on the console.

  • Cuphead (2017)

    • Xbox One
    • PC
    • Switch
    • PS4

A boss-rush run-and-gun animated cel by cel in 1930s style. Extremely hard, and the difficulty is the reason the art holds attention.

  • Sunset Overdrive (2014)

    • Xbox One
    • PC

Grinding and bouncing around a city, where standing still is punished. The most purely fun traversal of its generation and nobody played it.

  • Gears 5 (2019)

    • Xbox One
    • PC
    • Series X

The best-looking and most open Gears, with a campaign that finally lets you choose where to go. Three-player co-op throughout.

  • Sea of Thieves (2018)

    • Xbox One
    • PC
    • PS5
    • Series X

A pirate ship that needs four people to sail properly, in a world where other crews are the only real threat. Years of updates made it.

  • Halo 5: Guardians (2015)

    • Xbox One

A divisive campaign and the best multiplayer the series had at the time, with the movement additions the games kept afterwards.

  • Quantum Break (2016)

    • Xbox One
    • PC

Third-person shooting with time powers, interleaved with live-action television episodes that change based on choices. Nothing else has tried it since.

  • Rare Replay (2015)

    • Xbox One

Thirty Rare games from three decades in one package, from Jetpac to Viva Pinata. The best-value compilation on the console.

  • ReCore (2016)

    • Xbox One
    • PC

A third-person action game with swappable robot companions from the designer behind Mega Man. Rough, and the ideas in it deserved better.

Racing, and the rest

The console's quiet strength, plus the games Game Pass put in front of everyone.

  • Forza Horizon 4 (2018)

    • Xbox One
    • PC
    • Series X

Britain with changing seasons, which alters every road on a weekly cycle. The best open-world racing game there has been.

  • Forza Horizon 3 (2016)

    • Xbox One
    • PC

Australia, and the entry that got the festival structure right. Delisted now, which is why 4 is the practical recommendation.

  • Forza Motorsport 7 (2017)

    • Xbox One
    • PC

The simulation side of the series at its most complete, with a car list that has not been matched since.

  • Burnout Paradise Remastered (2018)

    • Xbox One
    • PS4
    • PC
    • Switch

An open city where crashing is the point and every road leads to a takedown. Still the most purely enjoyable arcade racer.

  • Titanfall 2 (2016)

    • Xbox One
    • PS4
    • PC

A six-hour campaign that reinvents itself every level, attached to the best-moving multiplayer shooter of its generation. Released against two giants and buried.

  • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (2017)

    • Xbox One
    • PS4
    • PC
    • Switch

Eight hours, built around binaural audio that puts voices inside the player's head. Made with input from clinicians, and unlike anything next to it.

  • Inside (2016)

    • Xbox One
    • PS4
    • PC
    • Switch

Limbo's successor, and better in every way — three hours, no words, and an ending that reframes the whole thing.

  • A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019)

    • Xbox One
    • PS4
    • PC
    • Switch

Stealth through 14th-century France with a sister to protect and thousands of rats that flee light. Linear, tense, and beautifully made.

  • The Outer Worlds (2019)

    • Xbox One
    • PS4
    • PC
    • Switch

Obsidian's first-person RPG, smaller than Fallout and far more reactive. A twenty-hour game rather than an eighty-hour one, on purpose.
