The 25 Best N64 Games Ever Made

The Nintendo 64 had fewer games than its rivals and a strange three-handled controller, and it still produced more design firsts than any console of its generation. Analogue movement, camera control and four-player split screen all became normal here.

Below is our ranked list of the best N64 games, with a dedicated section on N64 open world games and another on the four-player games the console was really built for. If you are hooking up original hardware, our N64 HDMI converter guide covers the picture problem.

Top 10 N64 games

  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)

    • N64
    • GameCube
    • 3DS
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

Z-targeting solved 3D combat and the time-travel structure gave Hyrule real weight. The Switch Online version is the easiest legal way to play it.

  • Super Mario 64 (1996)

    • N64
    • DS
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

The first 3D platformer that felt good to simply move around in. Its hub-and-star structure is still copied thirty years on.

  • GoldenEye 007 (1997)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)
    • Xbox

Objective-based stealth shooting plus the split-screen deathmatch that defined a generation of sleepovers. It finally got a legal re-release in 2023.

  • Mario Kart 64 (1996)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)
    • Wii U

Four-player battle mode on Block Fort is the reason this cartridge never left the console. Races are short and endlessly rerunnable.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (2000)

    • N64
    • 3DS
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

A three-day loop where every NPC has a schedule you can learn and interrupt. Darker, denser and shorter than Ocarina of Time.

  • Banjo-Kazooie (1998)

    • N64
    • Xbox
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

Collectathon platforming with worlds that are actually puzzle boxes. The move-learning structure keeps every world feeling new.

  • Perfect Dark (2000)

    • N64
    • Xbox
    • PC

GoldenEye's engine with better AI, co-op campaign and bots in multiplayer. The co-op and counter-operative modes were years ahead.

  • Star Fox 64 (1997)

    • N64
    • 3DS
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

Branching mission paths and full voice acting made a 90-minute game worth 20 replays. The Rumble Pak debuted here.

  • Paper Mario (2000)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

Timed-hit turn-based combat with flat-paper art that has aged beautifully. A friendly first RPG for younger players.

  • Conker's Bad Fur Day (2001)

    • N64
    • Xbox

A technically astonishing platformer wrapped in adult comedy and film parody. Its multiplayer modes were a genuine surprise on a cartridge.

N64 open world games

The N64 was where open-world design got its footing on consoles — big connected spaces, free camera, and objectives you could take in any order.

  • Body Harvest (1998)

    • N64

DMA Design's open-world action game with drivable vehicles across large maps — a direct ancestor of Grand Theft Auto III. Ambitious to a fault and fascinating today.

  • Banjo-Tooie (2000)

    • N64
    • Xbox
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

Worlds link directly into each other, turning the game into one huge interconnected space. Bigger and more puzzle-driven than the first game.

  • Donkey Kong 64 (1999)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

Five characters, one enormous shared world, and a famous amount of collecting. Best played in relaxed sessions rather than completion runs.

  • Ocarina of Time (open-world section) (1998)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

Hyrule Field connecting every region with a day-night cycle was the console's clearest open-world statement. Riding Epona across it still feels like freedom.

  • Hybrid Heaven (1999)

    • N64

An action-RPG with wrestling-style combat inside sprawling underground complexes. Strange, ambitious and almost entirely forgotten.

Best four-player N64 games

  • Super Smash Bros. (1999)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

The original percentage-based platform fighter, and still readable to complete beginners. Matches last two minutes, so nobody sits out for long.

  • Mario Party 2 (1999)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

The best-balanced of the N64 Mario Party games, with themed boards and minigames that do not require the rotating-stick ones. Set it to 20 turns for a full evening.

  • Diddy Kong Racing (1997)

    • N64
    • DS

Karts, hovercraft and planes in an adventure mode with boss races. It has more structure than Mario Kart 64 for solo play.

  • Bomberman 64 (1997)

    • N64

3D arenas with bomb-stacking traversal, plus a chaotic four-player battle mode. Rounds are over in a minute.

  • WWF No Mercy (2000)

    • N64

Deep grapple system, create-a-wrestler and four-player matches that turn into pure chaos. Widely considered the best wrestling game ever made.

N64 hidden gems

  • Sin and Punishment (2000)

    • N64
    • Wii
    • Wii U

A Japan-only rail shooter from Treasure with relentless pacing. It reached the West through Virtual Console re-releases.

  • Mischief Makers (1997)

    • N64
    • Switch (NSO Expansion)

A 2D grab-and-shake action game on a 3D console, with boss fights that are pure Treasure. Short and completely unique.

  • Blast Corps (1997)

    • N64
    • Rare Replay

Demolish buildings ahead of a runaway missile carrier, each vehicle a different puzzle. One of Rare's strangest and best ideas.

  • Ogre Battle 64 (1999)

    • N64

A dense tactical RPG with reputation systems and branching endings, released to almost no fanfare. A real time sink in the best way.

  • Wave Race 64 (1996)

    • N64

Water physics that still feel better than most modern racers, with buoy-weaving courses. Perfect for five-minute sessions.
