The Best Sega Saturn Games

The Saturn lost the generation badly in the West and is one of the most collected consoles today, for one reason: it was built for 2D at a moment when everyone else had moved to polygons, and the 2D games it got are still the best-looking of their kind.

It also has the most expensive second-hand library in games, because good games shipped in tiny quantities. This list is split into what the hardware was genuinely best at and the rarities worth knowing about before you see the price.

What the Saturn was best at

2D sprites, arcade ports and shooters — the things the hardware was actually designed for.

  • Guardian Heroes (1996)

    • Saturn
    • Xbox 360

A beat-'em-up with three depth planes, an RPG levelling layer and a branching story. Treasure's most ambitious game, and a six-player versus mode on top.

  • Radiant Silvergun (1998)

    • Saturn
    • Arcade
    • Xbox 360

A shoot-'em-up with seven weapons mapped to combinations of three buttons, and a chaining system that rewards colour discipline. Famously expensive on disc.

  • Virtua Fighter 2 (1995)

    • Saturn
    • Arcade
    • Modern collections

The most technically serious fighting game of its era, running at sixty frames per second on hardware that was not supposed to manage it.

  • Nights into Dreams (1996)

    • Saturn
    • PS2
    • PC
    • Console

Flight on a fixed track, scored on style and loops rather than time. Sold with its own analogue pad, and nothing has copied it since.

  • Street Fighter Alpha 2 (1996)

    • Saturn
    • Arcade
    • Modern collections

The Saturn port is the good one — with the 4MB RAM cart it keeps the animation frames the PlayStation version dropped.

  • Daytona USA (1995)

    • Saturn
    • Arcade
    • Modern re-release

The arcade racer with the theme song everybody knows. The launch port was rough; the later Championship Circuit Edition fixed most of it.

  • Sega Rally Championship (1995)

    • Saturn
    • Arcade

Three stages, four surfaces, and the first racing game where the road surface genuinely changed how the car behaved. Still fun in ten-minute pieces.

  • Virtua Cop (1995)

    • Saturn
    • Arcade
    • PC

Light-gun shooting with targeting reticles that warn you before a shot lands, which made the genre readable. Best with the Stunner peripheral.

  • Saturn Bomberman (1996)

    • Saturn

Ten players with two multitaps, which is still more local players than almost anything since. The best version of the best party game there is.

  • Darius Gaiden (1995)

    • Saturn
    • Arcade
    • Modern collections

Branching stages, mechanical fish bosses, and a soundtrack that takes the whole thing somewhere stranger than a shooter needs to go.

The Saturn RPGs and rarities

Small print runs, high prices. Several of these never left Japan and several cost more than the console.

  • Panzer Dragoon Saga (1998)

    • Saturn

An RPG built on the rail-shooter series, with a rotating battle system about positioning around an enemy. Famously rare and famously good.

  • Shining Force III (1997)

    • Saturn

Three linked scenarios telling the same war from three sides; only the first was released in English. Tactics at its most ambitious.

  • Dragon Force (1996)

    • Saturn
    • PS2

Strategy with hundred-soldier battles that resolve in real time while you issue one order at a time. Nothing else plays like it.

  • Burning Rangers (1998)

    • Saturn

Sonic Team's firefighting game, with transparent fire effects the hardware was not meant to do. Rough, short, and completely singular.

  • Panzer Dragoon Zwei (1996)

    • Saturn

The rail shooter refined — branching routes and a dragon that evolves based on how you play. Better than the first by a distance.

  • Legend of Oasis (1996)

    • Saturn

An action RPG from the Beyond Oasis team, with spirit summons and some of the best sprite animation on the console.

  • Dark Savior (1996)

    • Saturn

An isometric action game with five parallel scenarios decided by whether you make a timed escape in the first minutes. Strange and under-discussed.

  • Astal (1995)

    • Saturn

A hand-painted 2D platformer that exists mostly to show what the hardware could draw. Short, gorgeous, and hard.
