The Best Xbox 360 Games
The Xbox 360 did two things no console had managed before: it made online multiplayer the default rather than a feature, and it gave small developers a storefront. The first produced Halo 3 and Gears of War; the second produced Braid, Limbo and Super Meat Boy.
This is the list in those three parts — the big shooters, the role-playing games the generation is remembered for, and the Live Arcade releases that started the modern indie scene.
The Xbox 360 essentials
The big ones. Most are backward compatible on current Xbox hardware.
Gears of War (2006)
- Xbox 360
- Xbox One
- PC
Cover shooting as a genre started here, with a chainsaw on the rifle so nobody could accuse it of subtlety. The co-op campaign is the best way to play it.
Halo 3 (2007)
- Xbox 360
- Xbox One
- PC
The end of the original trilogy, and the game that made Forge and theatre mode normal. Four-player co-op across the whole campaign.
Mass Effect 2 (2010)
- Xbox 360
- PC
- Modern remaster
A recruitment story where everyone can die in the last hour depending on choices made twenty hours earlier. BioWare's tightest game.
Red Dead Redemption (2010)
- Xbox 360
- PS3
- Modern re-release
A western that is mostly about riding slowly, and the ending is still the most discussed in games. Rockstar's best-paced open world.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)
- Xbox 360
- PS3
- PC
- Everything since
The open world that went mainstream, and has been re-released on almost every platform since because people keep buying it.
BioShock (2007)
- Xbox 360
- PS3
- PC
- Switch
A shooter that spends its whole length setting up one question about player agency, and then asks it. Rapture is still the best-realised place in games.
Portal 2 (2011)
- Xbox 360
- PS3
- PC
First-person puzzles with the best comic writing in games, and a separate co-op campaign that is a different game rather than a mode.
Batman: Arkham City (2011)
- Xbox 360
- PS3
- PC
- Modern re-release
The freeflow combat system at its peak, in a city sized exactly right. Still the template every licensed superhero game follows.
Dark Souls (2011)
- Xbox 360
- PS3
- PC
- Modern remaster
The interconnected world is the achievement — one map that folds back on itself with shortcuts that reframe everything behind you.
Forza Horizon (2012)
- Xbox 360
The first open-road Forza, and the one that turned a simulation series into something you could play for twenty minutes after work.
Xbox Live Arcade and the first indie boom
A storefront small developers could actually reach, which had not existed on a console before.
Braid (2008)
- Xbox 360
- PC
- Modern re-release
Time manipulation as a puzzle language, one new rule per world. The game that proved a download-only title could be a main event.
Limbo (2010)
- Xbox 360
- PC
- Everything since
Silhouettes, physics puzzles and a great deal of dying. Three hours, no words, and it has not dated at all.
Super Meat Boy (2010)
- Xbox 360
- PC
- Switch
Precision platforming with instant restarts, which turned failure into a rhythm rather than a punishment. Brutal and fair.
Castle Crashers (2008)
- Xbox 360
- PC
- Switch
- PS4
Four-player side-scrolling brawling with an RPG levelling layer. Still one of the best things to put on when four people arrive.
Fez (2012)
- Xbox 360
- PC
- Switch
- PS4
A 2D platformer in a 3D world you rotate ninety degrees at a time, with a second layer of puzzles most players never finish.
Left 4 Dead 2 (2009)
- Xbox 360
- PC
Four-player co-op with a director that paces the horde against how well you are doing. Still the best-designed co-op shooter there is.
Xbox 360 games people forget
Good games from a crowded generation.
Lost Odyssey (2007)
- Xbox 360
A turn-based RPG from Final Fantasy's creator, with short written dream sequences that are the best thing in it. Xbox-only and never re-released.
Alan Wake (2010)
- Xbox 360
- PC
- Modern remaster
A thriller about a writer, where light is the weapon and the structure is a television season. Better than its combat.
Fable II (2008)
- Xbox 360
The one with the dog, and the most charming of the series. Still Xbox 360-only, which is why it is remembered less than it deserves.
Viva Pinata (2006)
- Xbox 360
- PC
A garden simulator with far more systems than its presentation admits. Rare's best game of the generation, aimed at children and played by adults.
Crackdown (2007)
- Xbox 360
Jumping is the whole game — collect orbs, jump higher, reach the roofs. The purest traversal loop of its generation.
Halo 4 (2012)
- Xbox 360
- Xbox One
- PC
343's first, and the best-looking thing the console ever ran. The story is the most personal the series has attempted.
