The 20 Best Wii Games — Nintendo Classics Ranked

The Wii sold to people who had never bought a console before, and its best games are still the friendliest catalogue Nintendo has ever assembled. Motion control aged unevenly, but the games built specifically around it hold up.

This list ranks the best Wii games and flags the Nintendo classic games for Wii — the Virtual Console re-releases and remasters that made the console a retro machine as well as a new one.

Best Wii games overall

  • Super Mario Galaxy (2007)

    • Wii
    • Switch

Gravity-flipping planetoids and an orchestral score that treats platforming as spectacle. Available again in the 3D All-Stars collection on Switch.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (2006)

    • Wii
    • GameCube
    • Wii U

The darkest-looking Zelda with the best dungeon set in the series. Motion aiming was optional enough that it never gets in the way.

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 (2010)

    • Wii
    • Wii U

More ideas per level than the first game, with Yoshi and a tighter difficulty curve. Pure level design with the story trimmed away.

  • Mario Kart Wii (2008)

    • Wii

Twelve-racer chaos with bikes and a wheel shell everybody has an opinion on. Still the easiest four-player setup on the console.

  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008)

    • Wii

Slower than Melee but with a huge single-player Subspace campaign and stage builder. Great for mixed-skill groups.

  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (2007)

    • Wii
    • Wii U

Pointer aiming genuinely improved this one — it is the most fluid Prime game to control. The trilogy version bundles all three.

  • Wii Sports Resort (2009)

    • Wii

MotionPlus made sword fighting and table tennis actually precise. Twelve sports, all learnable in thirty seconds.

  • Xenoblade Chronicles (2010)

    • Wii
    • 3DS
    • Switch

An enormous open-world JRPG running on modest hardware, with real-time combat and a genuinely surprising story. Around 80 hours.

  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010)

    • Wii
    • 3DS
    • Switch

Retro Studios' revival is one of the hardest and best 2D platformers of its generation. Two-player co-op is available but chaotic.

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii (2009)

    • Wii

Four-player simultaneous 2D Mario, which is either co-op or sabotage depending on your friends. Short stages make it ideal for family sessions.

The Wii's Virtual Console and its GameCube compatibility turned it into a retro machine. These are the classics worth tracking down on it.

Wii hidden gems

  • A Boy and His Blob (2009)

    • Wii
    • PC
    • PS4
    • Switch

Hand-drawn puzzle platforming with a jellybean-feeding mechanic. Slow, gentle and beautiful.

  • Little King's Story (2009)

    • Wii
    • PC
    • PS Vita

Pikmin-style kingdom management with a dark comic streak. Deep enough to lose a weekend to.

  • MadWorld (2009)

    • Wii

Black-and-white ultraviolence from Platinum Games, built around motion-controlled finishers. Short, loud and unlike anything else on the console.

  • Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure (2007)

    • Wii

Point-and-click puzzles reimagined for the Wii remote, with genuinely clever solutions. One of the best-reviewed games nobody bought.

  • Rhythm Heaven Fever (2011)

    • Wii

Two-button rhythm minigames with perfect comic timing. Sessions can be three minutes long.
