The Best Sega Genesis Games

The Genesis — Mega Drive outside North America — was the loud console: faster music, more attitude in the advertising, and a library that leaned on arcades while Nintendo leaned on Kyoto. That split is still audible in the FM synthesis of its soundtracks.

This is the list in three parts: the games everyone names, the arcade-lineage action games the hardware suited best, and the ones that are genuinely good and keep getting left off the official collections.

The Genesis essentials

The ones a collection will always include, and should.

  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

The spin dash turned a fast game into a controllable one. Chemical Plant Zone is still the best-paced level Sega has built.

  • Streets of Rage 2 (1992)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections
    • Switch

The best-feeling side-scrolling brawler of its era, with a soundtrack that outlived the genre. Two players, one couch, no explanation needed.

  • Gunstar Heroes (1993)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections
    • Switch

Treasure's debut, and a run-and-gun that never repeats a boss idea. Weapon combining gives it more depth than anything else on the system.

  • Phantasy Star IV (1993)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections
    • Switch

The best RPG on the console by a distance, with combo attacks and comic-panel cutscenes years before that was normal.

  • Shining Force II (1993)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections
    • Switch

Tactics with a gentle learning curve and a party you promote rather than replace. The friendliest strategy RPG of the 16-bit era.

  • Castlevania: Bloodlines (1994)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

The only Castlevania on Sega hardware, and one of the best of the pre-Symphony ones. Two characters with genuinely different movement.

  • Golden Axe (1989)

    • Genesis
    • Arcade
    • Modern collections

The arcade brawler that made the home port a selling point. Short, simple, and best with a second player and low expectations.

  • Earthworm Jim (1994)

    • Genesis
    • SNES
    • Modern collections

Hand-drawn animation used as the whole point, with level design that keeps interrupting itself for a joke. Awkward in places and still remarkable.

  • Contra: Hard Corps (1994)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

Four characters, branching paths and a difficulty level that borders on hostile. The most content any Contra has had.

  • Aladdin (1993)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

The one with the sword, animated by Disney's own artists. Moves like a cartoon rather than a platformer, which is the whole appeal and the whole difficulty.

Sega Genesis hidden gems

Good games that collections keep skipping, usually for licensing reasons.

  • Comix Zone (1995)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

A brawler set inside comic panels, where you climb between frames and the artist draws the enemies in. Brutally short and unlike anything else.

  • Ristar (1995)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

A platformer built on grabbing things with stretching arms rather than jumping on them. Released too late to be noticed and better than most of what was.

  • Thunder Force IV (1992)

    • Genesis
    • Switch

The best shoot-'em-up on the system, with vertically scrolling stages and a soundtrack that pushes the sound chip further than anything else.

  • Vectorman (1995)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

Pre-rendered sprites used well, with transformations that change how you move. Sega's late answer to Donkey Kong Country.

  • ToeJam and Earl (1991)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

A roguelike in 1991, co-op, with a split screen that pulls apart as you separate. Nothing else on the console is structured like it.

  • Road Rash (1991)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

Motorbike racing where hitting the other riders with a chain is a mechanic. The sense of speed still holds up.

  • Ecco the Dolphin (1992)

    • Genesis
    • Modern collections

Remembered as beautiful and remembered as cruel, both correctly. An underwater puzzle game with a difficulty curve that goes vertical.

Genesis arcade ports

Sega owned arcades, and the Genesis was sold on bringing them home. The ports are compromised and were still the closest anyone got at the time.

  • OutRun (1991)

    • Genesis
    • Arcade
    • Modern collections

Branching roads, a choice of radio station, and no opponents to beat — just a horizon and a clock. Still the most relaxed racing game there is.

  • Altered Beast (1988)

    • Genesis
    • Arcade
    • Modern collections

The pack-in game for a long time, which is why everyone of a certain age can quote it. Short, stiff, and historically unavoidable.

  • Mortal Kombat (1993)

    • Genesis
    • Arcade
    • Modern collections

The Genesis version kept the blood behind a code while the SNES one removed it, which decided a lot of playground arguments in Sega's favour.
