The Best Nintendo Switch Games
The Switch's trick is that the same machine is a console and a handheld, and the library bent to fit it. Big first-party games are built to be put down mid-level; the indie catalogue is enormous because a forty-minute commute is an ideal place to play a forty-minute game.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)

An open world that lets you climb anything and gives you almost no instructions. Eight years on, most games that copied it kept the map and missed the physics.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (2023)

The same world with a building system bolted on, and the building system is the whole game. Nothing else lets you solve a puzzle as stupidly.
Super Mario Odyssey (2017)

Throw the hat, become the thing. A 3D platformer with more ideas per hour than anything else on the console, and no filler between them.
Metroid Dread (2021)

The best-controlling 2D Metroid, and the hardest. The stalker sections are tense the first time and a speedrun the third.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017)

The most complete Mario Kart, with eight years of added tracks. Still the default thing to put on when four people sit down.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018)

Every fighter from every previous game, which is an absurd thing to have achieved. Deep enough for tournaments, loose enough for a party.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020)
- Switch
A game measured in months, not hours, where the only pressure is the one you invent. The terraforming turns it into a design tool.
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (2022)
- Switch
A hundred hours of enormous landscapes and a combat system that takes twenty of them to open up. The most generous RPG on the console.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses (2019)
- Switch
Tactics in the afternoon, a school timetable in the morning, and three branching campaigns that genuinely differ. The one that made the series mainstream.
Pikmin 4 (2023)
- Switch
The friendliest entry, with a dog that carries things and a rewind button. Still the same quiet strategy game about a shrinking day.

Splatoon 3 (2022)

A shooter scored on floor coverage rather than kills, which changes who can enjoy it entirely. The single-player campaign is a good tutorial and a good game.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (2017)

XCOM-style tactics with Mario characters, which should not work and does. The best turn-based entry point for someone who has never played one.
Mario Strikers: Battle League (2022)

Five-a-side football with tackles and no referee. Thin on content and excellent for twenty minutes with three other people.
Ring Fit Adventure (2019)

An RPG where the attacks are squats. Genuinely a workout, and the only fitness game with a levelling curve worth following.
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp (2023)
